Background of the study
Radio broadcasts remain a vital medium for information dissemination in Nigeria, particularly in regions where literacy rates vary. Hausa language programming, with its rich phonological features, plays an essential role in shaping listeners’ phonological awareness. This study examines how radio broadcasts influence the recognition and comprehension of phonetic patterns among Hausa speakers. It investigates aspects such as vowel clarity, consonant articulation, and intonation in Hausa news and cultural programs. Through acoustic analysis and listener surveys, the research aims to assess whether regular exposure to well-articulated broadcasts enhances phonological skills and overall language proficiency (Ogunleye, 2023). The study also considers the impact of broadcast quality and announcer training on phonological clarity, exploring how technology and policy initiatives can support effective language transmission. By linking media practices with language learning outcomes, the research offers insights into how radio can be leveraged to improve phonological awareness in diverse communities (Ibrahim, 2024; Suleiman, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the influential role of radio in promoting phonological awareness, little research has been conducted on its impact on Hausa language programming. Variations in broadcast clarity may hinder effective phonological learning, affecting overall language proficiency and communication. This gap in empirical research prevents the formulation of targeted interventions to enhance language transmission through radio (Ogunleye, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To analyze phonological features in Hausa radio broadcasts.
2. To assess their impact on listener phonological awareness.
3. To propose strategies for improving broadcast clarity.
Research questions:
1. What phonological features characterize Hausa broadcasts?
2. How do these features affect phonological awareness?
3. What improvements can enhance language learning via radio?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of radio broadcasts in enhancing phonological awareness among Hausa speakers, offering insights for educators and broadcasters to improve language proficiency through media (Suleiman, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to Hausa language radio broadcasts in Nigeria and does not extend to other languages or media forms.
Definitions of terms:
1. Phonological Awareness: The ability to recognize and process sound structures in language.
2. Radio Broadcasts: Audio programs transmitted over the airwaves.
3. Hausa Programming: Radio content delivered in the Hausa language.
